Keeping One Eye Open in the IT Recruiting Industry

As an IT recruiter, you may already have a great job and be pleased with your technical staffing company.  The problem is that you never what your future holds.  So what should you do even though you are already employed?  Here are a few tips to either secure your position or give you an exit strategy.

You should always keep tabs on how the market is doing in the IT recruiting industry throughout your career.  Over time your technical recruiting position may demand more money.  You may simply have more responsibilities for the same technical recruiting job as someone else who is compensated more.

Keeping tabs on the IT staffing industry will also help you figure out how your IT recruiting company may be doing in the IT staffing industry.  You need to have your finger on the pulse and know when your IT recruiting position is at risk.  It is better to know early on so that you have ample time to start your new job search.  Just because you have a stable technical recruiting does not mean it will always be that way.

Therefore, enjoy your recruiting position but always make sure to have a backup plan in case things go south.  There are always opportunities in the IT staffing industry. You just need to know how to find them.

How to Solve Work-related Problems at IT Staffing Companies

Problems will arise from time to time in any industry including IT staffing.  Of course some issues are smaller than others and may not really affect your IT recruiting job.  However, sometimes you will come across a problem that will affect your IT recruitment job.  Therefore, how should you handle the problems that arise?

First, go right to the source.  Ask the IT recruiter or IT recruiters, to sit down and discuss the matter. If that doesn’t resolve the problem, have a meeting with your boss.  Whether he or she is your IT recruiting manager or the director of the IT staffing office, tell him or her about the problems that you’re facing.  It is better to discuss these when they arise.  Your IT recruiting Boston job could be at risk if it is affecting your productivity.  You may start to lose interest in technical recruiting which in turn will affect your work.

Next discuss how you would like the problem to end.  Let them know the solution you want achieved.  It’s better to get it all out in the open rather than keep it to yourself. Figure out what needs to be done and ask your boss what he/she thinks is the appropriate action to achieve that solution.  Getting an opinion outside of the situation will help get some fresh plan of actions.

Lastly, make sure you to some action as soon as possible.  When a problem affects your incentive to work, then it needs to be solved immediately.  If there seems to be no solution to your problem then it may be time to consider a new IT staffing firm.  Maybe you can even transfer out of the IT recruiting department and get away from the issues you may be dealing with there.

Staying in Touch With IT Recruiters

In today’s age, the IT job search is almost completely done via the internet.  IT professionals are looking for various technical positions on IT recruiting company websites and job boards.  They submit their resumes or cover letters through email or a website.  Typically an IT recruiter or human resources will then contact you if you are a viable candidate.

Throughout the hiring process, you want to stay in close touch with the IT recruiters or human resources representative.  It’s important that you communicate your timeline just as much as they relay theirs.  Let them know if one of your other opportunities is heating up and/or whether you’ve received another offer that you’re considering.  Manage their expectations so they can accurately communicate your situation to the manager.  When done properly, you have an effective and efficient hiring scenario.

Staying in touch with the technical recruiter will affect both the relationship you form with the company and your chances of getting that IT job offer.  You may not always get that IT job you applied for, but if you build a positive relationship with IT headhunters, they will likely keep you in mind for a future opportunity that opens up.  Therefore, make sure to continue to update your contacts as you never know when it could benefit you in the future.

Sending Cover Letters Electronically

Selling yourself is critical when searching for a job.  As we have stressed, it’s important to sell yourself in an interview.  However, to get that IT job interview, you must first sell yourself in your resume.  However, before you send that resume, you actually have a chance to sell yourself in a cover letter.  This is your chance as an IT professional to give personality to your resume.

Since most resumes are now sent electronically, when an IT manager receives your email, the first item they will see is the subject line.  This is one advantage of sending your professional documents through the Internet.  Use this subject line to catch the attention of the hiring manager or IT recruiter.  Describe yourself in a few words and the position you are applying for.

A couple tips:  Always try finding the hiring managers name (then make sure you spell it correctly).  You do not want to be sending a cover letter to “Whom it may concern”.  If you cannot find a name then you can send it to Human Resources.

In terms of the length you do not want to keep those managers or IT recruiters reading a lengthy document about how you would be a perfect fit for the IT job.  Technical recruiters and information technology professionals are busy people who will likely not have the time or patience to read through a full page.  So take a good look at your experiences and why this position would be good for you.  As an IT professional you have to make sure that you sell your technical skills within the first paragraph.  Give those IT hiring managers and/or technical recruiters a brief overview that will keep them wanting to read more about you.

As always remember that the resume you send to IT recruiting companies must include the keywords referenced in the job description.  This will allow human resources or even some lesser-technical IT recruiters the ability to see that you have the information technology skills that their position requires.

Consider these tips before sending your next cover letter.   These come from IT recruiters Boston who spend countless hours every day reading resumes and cover letters.

How to Improve Your Work Life

Whether you are an IT recruiter or an IT professional, you may not realize that most of your time is spent working rather than at home.  Therefore, you should make sure that your time at work is used productively and enjoyably.

One of the most important factors you need to establish is the boundaries between work and personal life.  Without this boundary, you will not be able to enjoy both parts.  You need to know when it is time to go home and leave any unfinished work at work.

Some IT recruiters tend to have very little time during when the IT jobs start coming in.  Therefore, in order to get the perfect candidate for the technical job they end up working through lunch.  If you find yourself in this situation, be sure to take a walk or spend a few minutes doing something that allows you to take a brief break in your hectic work day.  Avoid burning out.

Another part of your work life is to bring in some of the things that you enjoy.  You may have a hobby or there may be another aspect of your life that bring joy to you.  So why not bring those parts with you to your IT recruiting office.  It’s good to decorate your cubicle or bring in office supplies that show off your personality.  This will allow you to show your creativity and be more relaxed while at work.

Work should not become a drag.  You need to enjoy being as work as much as possible as this is ultimately where we spend the majority of our lives.  If after taking these tips into consideration you still aren’t enjoying your work environment, then it may be time to contact an IT staffing agency to see what kinds of IT jobs are available to you.

Google TV, streaming movies and shows to your TV

Time is hard to come by with so many events, projects, and homework.  As an IT recruiter I work long hours and often weekends.  Therefore, I am not always able to watch my shows when they first air but instead opt to watch it online.  This requires me to find the episode online then connect my laptop to my television so that I can watch it.

Google TV is trying to cut out the laptop and just have you use your television to connect to the internet.  Many devices are now adding upgrades and applications to allow streaming to your television through services such as Netflix.

The only problem with this is that in order to stream from computers all you needed was a VGA cord or HDMI cable but with Google TV’s new service, your television will need to be compatible. In the end trying out the Google TV might be a pricey trial for now.

Our IT recruiting company has a number of employees who have been talking about the recent advancements in the video streaming industry.  A number of our technical resources also have engaged in new contract opportunities for various clients looking to capitalize on this very technology.

We’ll be sure to provide additional blog posts with any new updates.

Where are the IT jobs? In the IT Healthcare Industry!

The healthcare industry has been updating and improving many of their EMR and PACS systems within hospitals and doctors’ offices.  Workers within these facilities have to adjust to new machines and programs that will help them improve as a healthcare professional.  Therefore, the healthcare space is yet another growing field within the information technology industry.

Getting your start in the Healthcare IT field can prove to be challenging.  When we asked a number of our IT recruiters, their recommendation was to look for contract IT job opportunities with hospitals.  If a high tech professional is able to get their foot in the door within a hospital, it could lead to exposure to additional healthcare IT technologies or even headway directly into EMC or PACS (both of which are at the forefront of healthcare technologies).

Keep your eye out for contract IT job opportunities with hospitals.  Be sure to let IT recruiters know if you’re willing to relocate or travel, as it will obviously open up more opportunities for you.  Finally, look for healthcare IT certifications.  The more  relevant experience and certifications you can put on your resume, the better chance you have of being identified by an IT recruiting company or client directly.

Proofread

As a job seeker actively looking for an IT job, you are constantly sending out resumes and emails to hiring managers or IT recruiters working for IT staffing agencies.  In order to make sure that your email or resume is not disregarded, make sure that you proofread for any typos and grammatical errors.  Hiring managers want to go through a resume quickly without having to interpret what you meant to write.

By proofreading everything you send to a hiring manager or IT recruiter, they will be able to get through your documents and better see what IT skills you have.  The IT staffing industry is fast-paced and IT recruiters want to find the right prospective candidate for the IT job quickly.  By facilitating the process, you are giving yourself a better chance at that IT job.

Most importantly, by not proofreading your resume, you hurt your chances of landing that perfect IT job.  Take it from this IT recruiter who has had more than one client disqualify one of our candidates due to errors in the resume, proofreading is critically important.  Always put your best foot forward during the IT job search.  Don’t let someone disqualify you because you didn’t take the extra couple of minutes to proofread.

Tips on Submitting your Resume to Databases

Although it’s frustrating to submit your resume to IT staffing firms or direct clients without hearing back, it’s critical to get your information to as many databases as possible.  Searching for an IT job is a numbers game, the more databases you submit your resume to, the better odds that you’ll receive a call one day from an IT recruiter with that perfect job.

When IT recruiters are looking through databases, they typically search by keywords.  If you check one of our earlier articles, you can check out the tips our IT recruiter gave on putting the right skill keywords in your resume.  Therefore, before you submit your resume to that next database, make sure you list as many technical key words that you have experience with as possible (without fabricating of course).

Finally, make sure that all your information is accurate and consistent.  One pet peeve IT recruiters have is searching through a database and finding the exact same resume with a slightly different name.  By having different names you will obviously confuse IT recruiters, it could hurt your credibility and subsequently your chance to land that perfect technical job.

Privacy

In the IT Recruitment Industry, there are stipulations when it comes to teaming up with a well known IT staffing company.  Depending on the type of position, and situation, most clients expect IT staffing firms to maintain some level of confidentiality when it comes to filling one of their IT jobs. There are a number of reasons for this, there might be someone currently in the role that is being replaced (due to performance, attitude, etc) or the client might simply not want people to know they are actively hiring.

On the other side of the hiring process are the candidates.  Many IT recruiting companies keep the name of their end client confidential to prospective candidates.  The reason IT staffing firms do this is to eliminate the risk of a candidate just submitting him or herself directly immediately after they get off the phone with the IT recruiter.  Although most people who never do this (ultimately it would likely just hurt their chance of landing the opportunity), IT staffing companies protect themselves just in case.

Not many job seekers go straight to IT staffing agencies and a good portion of them may not even know these companies are even out there.  Therefore, the IT staffing industry as a whole needs to collectively educate job seekers to reinforce the facet that IT recruiting agencies are seen as a viable means to land their next IT job.
